Donation to Thoreau Navajo Outreach

Thoreau Navajo Outreach thanks Feed the Children for the detergent and cleaner’s donation.
The detergent and cleaners were sorted, packaged and distributed to various folks throughout
various communities. There are many families that struggle to make ends meet as
unemployment continues to be at an all-time low. Donations like yours helps out many
families.

Eastern Navajo Agency consists of 31 Chapters. The Eastern Agency is located on
approximately 1,039,210 acres and home to about 33,200 enrolled members. The Eastern Agency is a
portion of the Navajo Nation which is made up of five agencies: Chinle, Eastern, Fort Defiance Agency,
Shiprock and Tuba City Agency. In total, there are 110 chapters which make up the Navajo Nation.
There are many homes on the Navajo reservation that currently do not have electricity or running water
largely due to the confusion over citizenship. Although some tribes were granted citizenship in 1924,
most tribes were not afforded rights to vote until 1948. You can imagine that when water rights and
electricity lines were being connected, the reservation was largely neglected and were never
considered.
Today, most of our Navajo people who reside in rural areas on parts of the Navajo Reservation must
continue to heat their homes with wood stoves, haul water and utilize generators to light their homes.
You will find that a majority live below poverty levels and often rural locations can appear like homes in
developing nations.
